Head Wrap No. 1

Once one of the few cultural pieces enslaved Africans were able to bring to the Americas, head wraps continue to be a factor within my culture. The practices date back to pre-colonial African history in sub-Saharan Africa. Head wraps were considered symbols of status, marriage, and family lineage.

The folds and creases are symbolic of the twists and turns within history that have shaped the realities I experience daily as a black woman in America. While looking at a head wrap stacked tall and proud I see the reflections of my culture and every conceptual nuance associated with it.
